June 22, 2017 marks the start of summer solstice in the Philippines.
According to Vicente Malano, OIC administrator of Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration: “This is the time the sun attains its greatest declination of +23.5 degrees and passes directly overhead at noon at latitude 23.5 degrees North, the Tropic of Cancer.” The said phenomenon causes our country to experience longer days than nights.
Astronomers said that in the northern hemisphere, noontime shadows are shortest at this solstice – though for those in the southern hemisphere, it may mean seeing the longest noontime shadow.
