Bayan Muna Representative Carlos Isagani Zarate continues to compete against the proposed Asin Tax for he foresees the possible impact on poor Filipino people.

The proposal of imposing tax on salted products was introduced by Masbate Representative Scott Davies Lanete. Goods like junk foods, noodles, processed foods, and canned goods were among the identified products that will be affected by the tax bill.

According to Lanete, the proposed bill was intended for health safety. He also added that salt consumption increases the possibility of heart attack and stroke incidence.

As for Zarate, the proposed bill was “anti-poor” — driving poor Filipinos to hunger since there will be an expected increase on the prices of salted goods.

Cambodia, Jordan, Vietnam, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Panama, Kenya, Morocco, Uganda, and Suriname were among the countries that taxed products with salt content.
